The Traineeship Program offers 1-2 year paid employment for anyone looking to start their career in government.
There are flexible options to suit full-time, part-time and school-based traineeships.
You will complete a nationally recognised qualification with a registered training organisation, while you work in an NT Government agency.
Eligible participants are proudly supported by the Department of Education and Training’s user choice funding.
Who can apply
Anyone who:
- is 15 years or older
- is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or holds a visa supported by user choice funding - NT Apprenticeships and Traineeships Database | NT.GOV.AU
- Does not hold a qualification at the same or higher level in the preferred discipline area

School-based traineeships
Must meet the above eligibility criteria and be enrolled in secondary school in the Northern Territory.

How to apply
Your application should include:
- CV/Resume with 2 references from an Australian organisation or business
- One page summary (cover letter)
- Your most recent school results (if under 21 years of age)
- Any previous qualifications (if any)
- Visa holders must have an active visa for the entire duration of the program at the time of application and be eligible if successful
- Statutory of declaration of eligibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents
- Confirmation of Aboriginality within the first 3 months of employment if under special measures
Application stages
- Apply: Submit your application through the online form above.
- Shortlist: If your application is found to meet the eligibility criteria, it will be shortlisted for review and matched to one or more NT Government departments. More than one department may contact you.
- Reference checks: We will contact your referees.
- Interview: An interview will be scheduled if your application progresses to this stage.
- Outcome: The Early Careers team will notify you of the outcome.
