Nikita Dos Santos

"Don't be shy. Apply for that program or traineeship."

From a Year 12 student in Alice Springs to a senior administrative role in the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS), Nikita Dos Santos's journey shows how taking one opportunity can lead to a rewarding career, meaningful community impact and a future full of possibilities in the Territory.

While completing her final year at Centralian Senior College in Alice Springs, Nikita learned about the Aboriginal Employment Program (AEP) through a presentation at her school. Eager to begin a career with the Northern Territory Government, she saw the program as an opportunity to build her future in the Territory.

The AEP provided Nikita with valuable workplace experience and the opportunity to complete a Certificate II in Business, helping her develop skills in administration, communication and workplace professionalism.

"The AEP was instrumental in launching my career in the NTPS, leading directly to my first role as an AO2 Ministerial Assistant with the former Department of Tourism and Culture."

Nikita later joined the Aboriginal Employment and Career Development team within the Office of the Commissioner for Public Employment (OCPE) as an Administration Assistant, a role that held special significance.

"I first engaged with the team as a Year 12 student and AEP participant, so joining the team was a full-circle moment for me."

Over the past five years, Nikita has continued to grow professionally through a range of opportunities within OCPE. Today, she is the Senior Executive Assistant to the Commissioner for Public Employment.

Beyond her career, Nikita values the lifestyle and opportunities the Territory offers. As a mother, she is proud to call the Territory home and hopes to inspire the next generation of Aboriginal leaders.

"I am passionate about increasing representation and opportunities for Aboriginal people within the Northern Territory Public Sector and being part of initiatives that support Aboriginal people."

When asked what advice she would give to others considering the AEP, Nikita's message is simple: "Don't be shy. Apply for that program or traineeship. I didn't initially see myself working in the public sector, but taking that first step opened doors I didn't know existed."

"The Northern Territory is a great place to live, work and build a career. There are so many opportunities to learn, grow and make a difference."
