Moving to the NT from overseas

Bring original or certified copies of important documents for yourself and any family members travelling with you. What you need will depend on your circumstances, but it may include:

• passports, visas and visa grant information
• birth, marriage and change of name certificates
• driver licences and driving records
• medical, vaccination and prescription records
• children’s school reports and enrolment information
• university, trade and other education certificates
• employment records and professional references
• references from previous landlords
• taxation and financial documents.

Keep important documents with you while travelling rather than packing them with freight. Saving secure digital copies can also make them easier to access if something is delayed or lost.

Australia has strict customs and biosecurity rules. Some food, plant materials, animal products, medicines and household items may need to be declared, treated or left behind.

This can also apply to everyday belongings such as wooden items, outdoor equipment, seeds, herbs and food packed for the journey. If you are unsure about an item, declare it when you arrive.
