1. Freedom of information and privacy
The Act provides the community with rights to access government information, including personal information. The right to access information is limited in some circumstances. The Act protects the privacy of personal information held by public sector organisations and ensures that organisations collect and handle personal information responsibly.
You have the right to make applications to the Department on privacy and freedom of information matters to access and make corrections to the information that is held by us. We encourage you to contact us first to discuss any application you wish to make. We may be able to assist you without the need for an application.

2. Your personal information
Personal information is any information a public sector organisation holds from which a person’s identity is apparent or is reasonably able to be ascertained.
The Department takes all reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access to, and modification or disclosure of, personal information.
The Department takes reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse and loss.
You can make a request to the Department if you would like access to any personal information held by the Department about you. Access will be provided unless there is a law that authorises or requires access to be refused. If you request photocopies of documents or copies of photographs or other images, charges may apply.
3. Protecting your privacy
The Act provides remedies for interferences with the privacy of an individual's personal information. The Act contains 10 Information Privacy Principles that provide for the collection, use and disclosure, management and openness of personal information that the Department deals with.

Privacy complaints
If you are concerned that your personal information has not been protected, that the Department has interfered with your privacy or that the Department has otherwise contravened the Act, you can make a complaint in writing, setting out your name and contact details, and the circumstances that lead you to believe that your privacy has been breached. Please provide as much detail as possible such as date, time, location of incidents, who did what, and the names and contact details of any witnesses.
To make a privacy complaint, complete the online feedback form at https://cmc.nt.gov.au/contact/feedback If you are not satisfied with the response you receive from the Department in relation to a privacy complaint, you might then be entitled to lodge a complaint with the Northern Territory Information Commissioner.

4. Collection of information
The Department generally collects, holds, uses and discloses the following personal information:
- on users of the Platform based on their interaction with the Platform, other websites made available by the Department, social media accounts owned or operated by the Department and the departments customer relationship management tool (CRM), the NT Government or our partners;
- on users where their information is shared with us by a third party services (eg. where the user creates an account with us using credentials established with a third party service);
- information about other individuals provided to the Department by the user or a third party data provider, data from industry partnerships or from a marketing organisation; and
- relating to the employment, development and management of personnel.
Visitors to the Platform, on a voluntary basis, may supply additional personal information when:
- signing up to the departments customer relationship tool (CRM)
- participating in online forums, web forms, quizzes, surveys and chat rooms;
- posting information on the Platform or through social media;
- completing application forms; and
- requesting information via email.
Information is collected and stored when a user accesses the Platform or another site made available by the Department.
This information will include:
- the identity of the user’s internet browser;
- the user’s operating system;
- the user’s IP address and domain name of their Internet Service Provider;
- pages accessed and downloaded by the user;
- the user’s interaction with the Platform and its functions;
- the path of the user through the Platform or webpages and their activity;
- the date and time of visits to the Platform or site; and
- the address of the last page or site the user visited.
You do not have to provide your personal information to us but if you choose not to, we may not be able to provide you with all of the features of the Platform.
If you provide us with personal information about another person, please make sure that you tell them about this Policy.

5. Cookies
Some of the pages in the Platform use ‘cookies’. Cookies are text files that a website transfers to a user’s computer hard drive. Using cookies allows the Department to customise web content for individual users. Cookies by themselves do not allow the Department to see a user’s e-mail address or other personal information. If users submit personal information to the Department, the information may be linked to data stored in the cookie. Users should check the settings in their web browser if they do not want information to be collected through the use of cookies.
The Platform uses persistent cookies and session cookies:
Persistent cookies remain on your device for the period specified in the cookie. As an example, we use persistent cookies to recognise you each time you visit the Platform and to remember your preferences.
- Session cookies are created when you visit the Platform and are automatically deleted when you close your browser. As an example, we use these cookies to link your actions during a single session on the Platform and to make sure that the Platform performs reliably.
- Some of our partners can also set third-party cookies on your device when you visit the Platform. We and our partners may use third-party cookies to provide more relevant advertising, to understand our users better, to keep the Platform functioning reliably and to help us deliver our services.

Strictly necessary cookies
Strictly necessary cookies are essential in order to help you efficiently move around the Platform and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the Platform. Without these cookies, we cannot provide certain services.
Examples of how we use strictly necessary cookies may include:
- balancing website traffic to ensure users receive a consistent and reliable service.
- limiting traffic to key parts of the Platform to maintain performance levels.
- storing your acceptance of our privacy policy, cookies policy and website terms of use, without which access is not granted to the Platform.

Performance/statistics cookies
Performance/statistics cookies collect information about how visitors use the Platform and are only used to improve how the Platform works. Functionality/preferences cookies

Without these cookies you may find that certain non-essential features on the Platform don’t work, and you may find that the Platform is less convenient and reliable.
Examples of how we use functionality/preferences cookies may include:

- personalising your experience so you receive content that is relevant to you.
- testing different designs before making them permanent for all users to optimise the design experience so you find our site easier to use.

Targeting/marketing cookies
Targeting/marketing cookies remember your visits to the Platform and are used to help us and our partners to deliver advertising that is more relevant to you and your interests. They include third-party cookies placed by our partners and other advertisers who share cookie data with us. These cookies can also help us to limit the number of times you see an advertisement and to measure the effectiveness of an advertising campaign. Without these cookies you are likely to see less personalised advertising on the Platform and some of our partner offers may not work as expected.
Examples of how we use targeting/marketing cookies may include:
- allowing the Platform to serve up different versions of a page for marketing purposes.
- allowing third parties to display appropriate advertising and to track its effectiveness.
- displaying messages which offer a selection of products based on your viewing behaviour on the Platform and other selected websites.
- understanding our customers and members (including their online behaviour) that then drives all kinds of data-led usage. This may include sharing and receiving cookies with third parties from time to time.
6. Collection and use of information
Information collected by the Department is only for purposes related to its core functions and activities.
The Department’s purposes in making the Platform available are to encourage and assist jobseekers to sign up for an electronic direct mail marketing (EDM) encouraging them to work in the and move to the Northern Territory (Purpose). The Department may collect and handle personal information for the Purpose.
The Department may use personal information to contact the individual for direct marketing or market research purposes.
The Department may use personal information to provide direct communication through email, targeted and retargeted advertising,
targeted personalised digital content, social media contacts or other means. The Department will use information on internet usage for the purpose of targeting specific content to users for the Purpose. The Department will prominently provide a notice in each direct communication specifying how an individual can request to discontinue future direct marketing or market research communications, where a user has not opted out.
The Department uses personal information for statistical purposes. Where information is used for statistical purposes, all information capable of identifying an individual user will be removed. Statistics compiled from personal information may be made public, however no information enabling identification of any individual will be included in such statistical material.
The Department uses personal information to learn more about people using its websites and social media. The Department may collect, collate, and analyse this information to better understand and target its users and audience. The Department may use this information to specifically target messages to users.
IP addresses are used to analyse trends, administer the Platform, track users’ movement, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.
Personal information may be shared with:
Those that you have consented we disclose your personal information to, either impliedly by your conduct, verbally or in writing;
- The Australian Government;
- Potential employers using the Platform;
- Advertisers;
- Cooperative marketing partners;
- Other Departments and NT Government agencies; and
- Third parties under contract to the Department.
Some of our service providers or end users may be located outside Australia. As a result, you consent to personal information collected and held by us being transferred to recipients in other countries.
All parties with access to this information will manage it in line with applicable legislation.
The Department will not disclose personal information for any reason other than the above situations without consent, unless disclosure is to prevent a threat to life or serious illness, is authorised or required by law or for investigation proceedings of reasonably suspected unlawful activity.
If at any point the Department decides to use personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, all affected users will be notified. Users will have a choice as to whether their information is used in this manner.
The Platform may contain links to third party websites. The Department is not responsible for the privacy practices of those linked sites.

7. Foreign data protection laws
Foreign data protection laws may apply to certain personal information that the Department collects, uses, discloses and otherwise processes. Foreign data protection laws may extend to broader categories of personal information than under the Act, such as information which relates to an identified or identifiable individual. This could include technical data collected by a website.
Under some foreign data protection laws (including the EU General Data Protection Regulation), you may be able to exercise additional data subject rights – for example:

Retention period
We may receive copies of material containing your personal information from the sourcing collecting on the webpage. If so, we will retain that personal information for as long as is necessary for the processing purpose(s) for which the information was collected, and any other permissible, related purpose. When that personal information is no longer needed, we will either securely destroy it, or irreversibly anonymise the data (and we may further retain and use the anonymised information).

Opt-out from online targeting & advertising cookies

How to manage your cookies
