Multicultural

Everyone is welcome in the Territory.

The Northern Territory is a place with many cultures which are celebrated right across the Territory. We have over 100 nationalities and around 140 social, cultural, and religious organisations.

The NT is home to some of the world’s oldest living cultures

The Aboriginal people of Australia are one of the world’s oldest living cultural groups. The diversity of the culture and language is vast, with rich traditions and beliefs, tying to the Australian land.

There are many ways to learn and connect with the diverse Aboriginal cultures found throughout the Top End and Red Centre, whether it’s by taking a locally guided tour; exploring the galleries and attractions or by venturing on a road trip through the World Heritage-listed national parks of Uluru, Kakadu or further into Arnhem Land.

From Aboriginal art fairs in Darwin to the cultural festivals in Alice Springs and the connections found on Country around Nhulunbuy. The NT acknowledges the traditional owners and celebrates Aboriginal culture.

The Territory has a rich history of multiculturalism

Multiculturalism in the NT is shaped by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, newly arrived migrants from all parts of the world as well as established multicultural communities. Explore multicultural groups in the Territory.

Religious freedom and mutual respect are integral to the NT’s shared culture. The Territory is home to Islamic mosques, Buddhist and Chinese temples, and a range of Christian churches. You can find more information about the religions observed in the Northern Territory.

Additionally, SBS Radio broadcasts in 68 languages, and SBS TV airs programs featuring news, sport, movies, and entertainment from around the world. A multilingual interpreter service is available for those needing assistance with business or other matters, and access to these services can be found via the Northern Territory Government website.
