The ultimate guide for coffee in Darwin
When Australians think of cafe culture and coffee snobs, our minds tend to lead us to the Victorian capital, not the Northern Territory one. Darwin is not only home to some beautiful scenery, but it also hosts some great cafes and coffee. Get ready to start a long ‘must-try’ list once you move to the Top End.
On the go
When you’re running late to work and need to quickly grab a coffee before you head in, Coffee Man is a great place to stop in at. Placed on Mitchell Street, Coffee Man is the central location for CBD workers or anyone passing through the city.
Further out of the city in Winnellie is coffee van Seashells Coffee and Treats. Consider it a drive-thru on the highway, with locals pulling off to grab a last-minute pick me up before they start their day.
Woolner also has its own coffee van, Percolated Darwin, which pushes the boundaries with iced drink flavours if you want to try something new. From Biscoff to Dubai chocolate flavours, Percolated just might make you want to get out of your comfort zone drink.
With a view
Sometimes, sitting down for a coffee is less about what you’re drinking, and more about where you’re enjoying it and with whom. If you’re up for a morning walk along the foreshore with an iced latte, the Foreshore Café in Nightcliff is an ideal location. Situated between The Beachfront Hotel and Nightcliff Jetty, the Foreshore stays open late for dinner, so you won’t miss out when you have a lazy morning.
Eva’s Café provides a relaxing atmosphere for a coffee. Surrounded by the George Brown Botanic Gardens, the heritage listed Wesleyan Church takes you to another world. Bring your pets, enjoy a scone and chill out while nestled in the gardens.
Up in Brinkin, you can take your dog for a walk along the beach followed by cappuccino and croissant at De La Plage Café. Choose between bean bags, hammocks or just a picnic rug and take in the scenic views of Casuarina Beach.
Bring the kids
Taking your kids to coffee can end up stressing you out, but in the Top End, it doesn’t have to. Down the road in Palmerston is The PlayShack, perfect for young families. With an indoor play centre combined with a café, the kids can let out all their energy while parents can sit back, enjoy a coffee and have little moments rest from the craziness.
If you’re after an outdoor setting for the kids to run around in, take a drive down to Casa de Bilsk in Howard Springs, which has a garden full of flowers and plants to surround you while you sit in the outdoor alfresco space.
For a morning out shopping, Casuarina Square has many spots to grab a coffee and sit and watch the kids play in the indoor playground. They often host activities and events for kids as well, which can slide in perfectly to a day of retail therapy.
With a feed
If just a coffee won’t suffice and you need a meal to get you through, there are some strong options that make it hard to choose a spot. A local’s favourite in Parap is Laneway Coffee, ideally located at the Parap Village Markets. From mouth watering chilli scrambled eggs, to nourishing brekkie bowls, Laneway will be sure to leave your stomach and heart full. Be aware that you may need to book a table on Saturday mornings when the Parap Markets are on!
For a unique coffee experience, give The Gully Café a chance. Overlooking Darwin Harbour at Doctors Gully, you can take your pick from an elite bagel menu to go with your coffee and even participate in the fish feeding at Aquascene!
Café Central, tucked away in the streets of Rapid Creek, is another local’s favourite spot to sit and enjoy a coffee and a feed. Try their popular breakfast burrito or a burger from their all-day menu with your coffee.
There really is a place to suit all coffee lovers in Darwin. It is impossible to list all the great spots across the city. This may be a good way to start your must-try list, just know that list will get longer and longer once you meet new people and start your own adventure in the Top End!
