Man fishing in Gove Northern Territory

Why fishing is better in the Territory

There’s more than one reason to move to the Territory if you’re a mad keen fisho!

Fishing comps

You’ve probably heard about the Million Dollar Fish competition. There are 11 chances to catch the Barra of a lifetime and net yourself $1 million in prize money. But that’s not all, the chances are even greater with 100 red tagged Barra worth $10k each. Make sure you are registered for each season of Million Dollar Fish, to be eligible to take home huge cash prizes if you bag a prize-tagged fish.

A home to many

The Territory is home to world class estuarine and blue water fishing. Not only can you get that metre barra you always dreamed of, but there are also more fish species than you could poke a rod at. Our favourite reef fish that are great to catch and even better to eat are the mighty Jewfish (Mulloway to you southerners), Snapper, Red Emperor, Threadfin Salmon and Coral Trout. If deep blue sports fishing is your thing, there’s Sailfish, Black Marlin and Spanish Mackerel bigger than your esky.

Try something new

Getting amongst it is easy. If you don’t have a boat, don’t worry, there’s plenty of opportunities to go land based fishing with spots near and far producing good fish. There’s a great selection of fishing charters targeting all species both in the Territory’s amazing creeks and rivers as well as out in the harbour. If you have a boat or thinking of getting one, you’ll be happy to know there’s no requirement for a recreational boat or fishing licence. That means more money to spend on gear. How good is that!

Plan your trip

The weather is favourable all year-round to get out and do your thing. Boating, camping and fishing is a favourite past time for most Territorians and there has been plenty of money spent on infrastructure to meet the demand. Access to the best spots has seen modern boat ramps and facilities built to cater for any time of the tide or season. Key spots include Darwin Harbour, Kakadu, Daly River, Roper River, and the Tiwi Islands.

If we have whet your appetite, then it’s time to move up, wet a line and catch that million dollar barra.
