Moving somewhere new can take a little more planning when you or someone in your family lives with disability.

Whether you’re preparing for a move or already call the Territory home, this page can help you find disability services, accessible transport, community facilities and advocacy support across the NT.

Plan your support

A little planning before you move can make settling into Territory life much easier. If you use regular or specialised disability services, start by getting in touch with providers in the area you’re moving to, particularly if you’re relocating to regional NT.

If you are an NDIS participant, your support coordinator, plan manager or the NDIS can help you prepare for the move and connect with services in your new community. Starting these conversations early will give you plenty of time to make arrangements.

Getting around

Whether you’re heading to work, an appointment or catching up with friends, there are accessible transport options to help you get around. NT public buses have ramps for people using standard wheelchairs and mobility aids.

Accessible taxis are also available, and you may be eligible for help with travel costs through the NT Transport Subsidy Scheme.

Someone in your corner

Sometimes it helps to have someone in your corner. A disability advocate can help you understand and exercise your rights, access services and support, or work through an issue.

Different services support different parts of the Territory. Integrated Disability Action provides individual advocacy in the Darwin region and information and referrals across the NT. Darwin Community Legal Service supports people in Darwin, Palmerston and Litchfield, while Disability Advocacy Service supports people and families in Central Australia.

The NT Government’s disability advocacy page also lists support for carers, autistic people, people with intellectual disability and people living in remote communities.
