Five cultural festivals to experience in the Territory
The Northern Territory is a place with many cultures which are celebrated in all kinds of unique ways.
The NT is home to some of the world’s oldest living cultures, and a welcoming place to migrants from all parts of the world. The Territory prides itself on its ability to host a good festival, particularly in the dry season. So, what better way to connect the two than a cultural festival? Here are some to add to your must do list after moving to the NT.
Barunga Festival
Located 80 kilometres from Katherine with a population of 360, Barunga hosts a festival to celebrate Aboriginal culture. Expect to hear from Traditional Owners, watch music performances and participate in a large range of traditional activities. Going to Barunga Festival is a great way to spend your June long weekend, camping in community and immersing yourself in the culture. From footy matches to markets and even weaving and spear making classes, Barunga is a must if you’re after an Aboriginal cultural experience in the Big Rivers region.
Garma Festival
Garma Festival is on a long weekend in August and celebrates Aboriginal culture, with a focus on Yolngu life. Held in northeast Arnhem Land, this festival has traditional dance and art, while also holding political and social talks to discuss Indigenous affairs. This is the perfect place to learn from and celebrate Indigenous culture while camping in Arnhem Land. Tickets include tent accommodation, a sleeping bag and meals.
Parrtjima – A Festival in Light
For a unique experience connecting Aboriginal art with modern technology, check out Parrtjima down in Alice Springs. Parrtjima – A Festival in Light is held over 10 nights, with everything from light shows displayed around the stunning MacDonnell Ranges, to interactive workshops like pottery making and bushfood cooking. This event is free to attend and take in the beauty of Aboriginal art and culture in Alice Springs.
Greek GleNTi
Missing Europe or craving some Dolamades? Darwin hosts Greek GleNTi, the Territory’s largest annual cultural festival, celebrating all things Greek. Enjoy the food, smash some plates and watch traditional dancing as the festival takes over the esplanade in the city. GleNTi is a free event held on the June long weekend, which sadly is the same weekend as Barunga Festival, but an easier trek for those who don’t want to travel too far from Darwin City.
Thailand Grand Festival
For a day of games, performances, food and Muay Thai, you can attend the Thailand Grand Festival in April. Hosted at Civic Park in Darwin City, this festival brings together people who call the Territory home by celebrating its diversity and Thai culture together. The Thailand Grand Festival is a free event and is suitable for the whole family to enjoy.
