Four easy ways to meet people in Darwin

If you are moving or have moved to Darwin, there are so many ways to make new friends.

Playgroups

Moving to a new city with a young family can be challenging. From new schools to a change of routine for the kids, there are so many adjustments for them that parents often forget about themselves. This is why finding playgroups in a new hometown is so important for parents to not only find a safe space for their kids to play with others, but also to meet likeminded people and lay foundations in their new community. The City of Darwin hosts Fun Bus mobile playgroup, and gives families a casual space to come together and have fun.  Held in Casuarina Square, Messy Bubs Darwin, is a great way for kids to play in a controlled mess together while parents and carers relax and avoid the clean-up of sensory play! Book clubs

Whether you join for the social connection, the love of reading or just to discuss and discover new books, book clubs are an easy way to settle into your new community. New to the book club scene is Book Besties Darwin. This book club has a monthly read and meet up and is perfect for people who are looking to find their people in a low commitment yet social environment. Their meet ups are at local bars and restaurants to discuss the monthly book (or any books really!), making it the ideal club for social butterflies and meeting new people. Local libraries in Darwin also hold monthly book clubs, which is assisted by a library staff member, with a heavier focus on discussing the book while still being an easy way to meet likeminded people. Sport and group fitness

Keeping fit and in routine can be hard to do alone. Doing it socially is an easy way to find people with aligning values and interests. The beauty of fitness and sporting groups is the variety in the types of sport, levels of skill and commitment flexibility. The Top End is home to many run clubs, like Run Club Darwin and Parkrun, which are free groups to join and often come with a coffee or chat afterwards. If running isn't you’re thing, the Darwin Dippers is the group to join. Having a quick dip and coffee along the beach on a Wednesday morning is a fun and effortless way to meet people and join a community. Find out more about health and fitness groups. For those happy to commit a little more and create strong social connections, sports clubs are aplenty in the NT and offer the opportunity to try something new – because, why not? Whether its AFL, cricket or netball, Darwin has something for every skill level and every interest. Check out the sports clubs in the NT.

Multicultural groups

Connecting with culture and heritage are important parts of feeling at home within the community you live in. The NT is not only home to one of the world’s oldest living cultures, but it also has a thriving community of diversity and multiculturalism, with over 100 nationalities calling the Territory home. Some of these groups also host annual festivals like the Thailand Grand Festival and India at Mindil. Discover more about multicultural groups and festivals in the Northern Territory.
