Cassandra Henaway

"Just do it"

After 27 years working in education, Cassandra took a leap into a new career through the Aboriginal Employment Program (AEP). More than a decade later, that decision has led to a rewarding career in the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS).

A proud Birri Gubba, Durumbal and Koinjmal woman, Cassandra applied for the AEP in 2015 while looking for a new challenge. The program provided a pathway into the NTPS, where she started as an AO2 Accounts Officer with the former Department of Corporate and Information Services.

Since then, Cassandra has continued to grow her skills and progress her career, moving through several roles across finance and taxation. Today, she works as an AOS in the Contracting Services Unit for GrantsNT within the Department of Children and Families.

"The program gave me the opportunity and support to transition into a new career and build a strong foundation within the public service."

Throughout her career, Cassandra has contributed to important projects, including helping develop the Northern Territory Government payment system. Her team was nominated for a Chief Minister's Award in recognition of this work.

Before joining the NTPS, Cassandra spent many years supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and communities through education roles across Australia. These experiences helped shape the strong community focus she brings to her work today.

For Cassandra, the Territory has provided opportunities to learn, grow and build a meaningful career while making a positive contribution to the community.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, especially her nephew, and her dog, who keeps her busy.

When asked what advice she would give to others considering the Aboriginal Employment Program, Cassandra's response is simple:

"Just do it."

"The program is a great starting point for a career in the NTPS. It gives you the opportunity to build your skills, grow your knowledge and explore a range of career pathways across government."
