"Careers in data and technology can be found in all sorts of places, even where you might not expect."
The Northern Territory Government's Work Experience Program is helping students explore future career pathways and gain valuable insight into the world of work.
Recently, Year 10 student Prajeeth completed a week-long placement with the Department of Mining and Energy, where he was introduced to a range of projects, technologies and specialist work areas. Tailored to his interests in data analytics and digital technologies, the placement included workplace tours, presentations from subject matter experts and hands-on learning activities covering energy development, geological surveys and emerging technologies.
A highlight of the placement was a practical project using Microsoft Lists, Power BI and Power Automate, where Prajeeth created and analysed data before presenting his findings through an interactive dashboard.
Angela Kennedy, Senior Compliance Liaison Officer, said, "Prajeeth embraced every opportunity throughout the week and showed that careers in data and technology can be found in all sorts of places, even where you might not expect."
The Work Experience Program is designed to help students connect classroom learning with real-world careers, while providing a supportive environment to build confidence, develop workplace skills and discover future pathways.
Experiences like Prajeeth's demonstrate the value of giving young Territorians meaningful exposure to professional workplaces and the diverse opportunities available within government. Through hands-on learning, workplace mentoring and practical projects, students gain a greater understanding of the skills, knowledge and career options that can help shape their future.
