Rik Wright

Backing yourself and building momentum in the NTPS.

Starting your career can feel like a big step, but for Rik Wright, it was all about backing himself and giving something new a go.

Through the Aboriginal Employment Program (AEP), Rik entered the Northern Territory Public Sector keen to build his workplace skills and explore where a career in government could take him in a place known for its unique opportunities and strong sense of community.

“I wanted to build my skills and see what opportunities were out there,” he said.

Programs like the AEP create opportunities for Aboriginal Territorians to step into the NTPS, gain hands-on experience and develop the skills and confidence to pursue future career pathways.

Now working as a Business Support Officer with the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet, Rik has developed a strong foundation in administration, communication and time omanagement, along with the confidence to step into new challenges.

During the program, no two days looked the same. From helping deliver events at Parliament House with Protocol NT, to preparing quotes for projects, attending stakeholder meetings, and even delivering a speech at his AEP graduation. Rik gained a real, hands-on understanding of how government works.

These experiences helped him build practical skills across Microsoft tools, invoicing, data entry and professional communication, while also learning how to manage his time and adapt in a fast-paced environment. But what stands out most for Rik is the growth in confidence.

“The program helped me grow, adapt and feel more confident working with people across the NT”.

Beyond the role itself, Rik has built a routine that keeps him motivated and balanced. Darwin’s lifestyle makes it easy to stay active, with great skate parks and open spaces close to the city. Rik often cruises on his skateboard during his lunch break, taking advantage of the Esplanade and surrounding areas, something that’s uniquely accessible in the Territory.

Stories like Rik’s highlight what makes the NTPS such an attractive place to start and grow a career, not just for locals but for anyone across Australia considering new opportunities. The Territory offers diverse experiences, real responsibility early on, and a lifestyle where work and life genuinely go hand in hand.

Looking ahead, Rik is keen to keep building his experience, taking on new challenges and continuing to grow within the NTPS.

For anyone considering the program, his advice is simple: “be open, stay curious and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, you’ll learn the most by giving new things a go”.
