Shiraz Shrestha
Master of Science and Technology student at Charles Darwin University.
The Territory’s vibrant multicultural community, access to excellent educational resources, and unique professional opportunities provide the perfect setting to thrive.
The sense of community in the Territory is truly special.
Shiraz Shrestha, originally from Nepal has proudly called the Territory his home for almost 2 years now. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Information Technology with a focus on cyber security at Charles Darwin University (CDU). Alongside his studies Shiraz balances a part time job in customer service and his passion for photography and videography. Prior to making the move to Australia Shiraz studied and worked in both Nepal and the United States.
"The Northern Territory offers a close-knit and welcoming community where it is easy to connect with like-minded individuals. Whether it’s through university clubs or community volunteering"
Shiraz has said the NT, although different to Nepal and the US has offered him a lot in terms of professional experience and development.
“My experience in the Northern Territory has been highly rewarding, both academically and professionally. Shiraz shares “Studying at CDU has given me access to practical, real-world skills in cybersecurity, provided a platform to hone my leadership qualities, while working part-time has allowed me to hone my time management skills and interact with the diverse local community. The balance between academic learning and work has been both challenging and enriching, pushing me to grow in multiple aspects of my life.”
Shiraz is actively involved in various clubs and leadership roles at CDU, including serving as the President of the CDU Cyber Security Club and the CDU Internet of Things (IoT) Club, as well as fulfilling roles as an IT Code Fair Ambassador and a Study NT Ambassador. These positions allow him to connect with fellow students, provide mentorship to junior students, foster collaboration, and contribute to the vibrant CDU campus culture.
Shiraz says “The Territory’s vibrant multicultural community, access to excellent educational resources, and unique professional opportunities” have provided the perfect setting for him to thrive. Shiraz's active involvement in CDU activities and events has provided him with the opportunity to simultaneously pursue his academic interests and personal hobbies. “As the IT Code Fair Ambassador, I had the opportunity to help the team film interviews with key figures, including the Vice Chancellor, professors, and staff, for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the IT Code Fair 2023, and I am continuing to do so for 2024.”
The supportive environment at CDU facilitated a smooth transition to life in the Territory, providing Shiraz with countless opportunities for academic and personal development. A major highlight for Shiraz was winning the GovHack 2023 competition, which “showcased the NT’s support for innovation and technology.”
For those considering a move to the Northern Territory, Shiraz has some valuable advice: “embrace the unique opportunities and experiences the region offers. The Territory provides a perfect blend of education, work-life balance, and community engagement. Get involved in the local community, whether through university clubs or volunteering, as this will greatly enrich your experience and help you form lasting connections.”
