Lured in by the fishing and relaxed lifestyle Brad stayed for a multifaceted teaching career.

Meet Brad, a secondary school Design and Technology Teacher specialising in Woodwork, Metalwork and Food Technology (and catching big Barra!)

In 2017 Brad relocated to the Tiwi Islands from regional NSW for a 12-month contract.

However, that's not where Brad's journey in the Territory ended. After a stint back in NSW, Brad took an opportunity to teach at Nhulunbuy High School during 2023, prior to commencing at Darwin High School this year.

Brad says "While working on the Tiwi Islands, in the Top End of the NT, I was able to develop my understanding about country and culture through immersive experiences such as traditional hunting and gathering and learning about Aboriginal student's dreaming stories. My experiences on the Tiwi Islands were rich and profound, it was a highlight to date.

"While at Tiwi Islands, I learnt early on that developing strong teacher/students’ relationships is key to engaging students in whatever field of interest they have. Education can be crafted to suit all styles of learners."

"I am currently working at Darwin High School. I was attracted to Darwin High because of the facilities and the reputation of the school and the type of technology subjects on offer.”

It’s a welcoming work environment. “The current faculty staff I work with put on a staff driven lunch each Wednesday during our staff meeting. We all come together to talk and eat different foods from around the world supplied by those on that week. This is a simple but great way to have a chat with colleagues and promotes an inclusive environment."

Advice for any teachers thinking about the move, Brad says "The NT is a place you can experience things nowhere else in the world. It has its own time known as 'Territory Time' things are a little slower, but adventure awaits should you just be open to it. There is so much to learn and discover here. I think everyone should at least spend a year or two in the Territory."
