Heather Carter

Meet Heather, originally from Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Heather was living, working and studying in Darwin while looking for schools to undertake her university placements. A colleague called Heather that had recently made the move to Ngukurr and encouraged her to complete a remote placement. Seven years later, Heather has enjoyed the spoils of remote living going from Classroom Teacher to Assistant Principal and experiencing both personal and professional growth.

Heathers says "Teaching in the Territory has been truly life changing and there are way too many rewarding experiences to count. I think one of the main ones has been building relationships with students across the school and seeing the positive impacts this had on their attendance and progress.  When I was a classroom teacher, I loved creating a beautiful classroom space and different themed play areas and students loved them too. They would be so excited to come into school after the end of a unit to see what their new play space looked like. Seeing their love of learning grow was definitely a highlight. Now I am in leadership, it is really rewarding to be the person students want to go to when they have problems or they need help."

"My number one piece of advice for new teachers would be to try and do a placement in a remote community before you commit to a full time teaching position. Teaching remote is definitely not for everyone and having an insight of what it was like to teach here was really valuable. For experienced teachers - do your research and try and make connections with someone who works at the school you are interested in going to. For all teachers - ask questions, have an open mind, embrace opportunities and have fun."
