Executive Assistant to the General Manager, Department of People, Sport and Culture

As an international student, I want to encourage my fellow students to explore the wealth of opportunities the Northern Territory has to offer. While securing a professional job on a student visa can be challenging due to certain restrictions, possessing the right skills and expertise can significantly enhance your chances of success.

Working in the NT dispelled myths about securing government roles on a visa.

Originally from Pakistan, Aghmaz Hassan Madni, started his journey in Australia as an international student. After living in Melbourne for two years he decided to relocate to the Territory to complete a Bachelor’s in Information Technology at Charles Darwin University (CDU).

Whilst rewarding, Aghmaz said his move to the Northern Territory was quite the journey!

“The transition from Melbourne to Darwin was a big step, but the opportunities here have exceeded my expectations. The Territory has a way of making you feel at home, and I’ve grown so much since moving here. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey.”

After gaining valuable work experience as a student, Aghmaz sought opportunities with the Northern Territory Government (NTG) to further develop his skills and contribute meaningfully to his local community. Within two months of completing his studies, Aghmaz started his current role as an executive assistant in the Department of People, Sport and Culture where he enjoys engaging with his peers and promoting the NT.

“My experience working in the NT has been incredibly rewarding. It has also helped to dispel previous misconceptions that securing a government job while on a visa is difficult. The NTG values diversity and inclusion, creating an environment where individuals can grow and thrive professionally.”

In addition to his professional achievements, Aghmaz has found joy in the Territory’s unique lifestyle.

“I enjoy walking along the beach which is just a short distance away. The relaxed pace, less traffic, and vibrant community make living here truly special. Small pleasures like local markets and a strong connection to nature add to the charm.”

Reflecting on his journey, Aghmaz emphasizes how the NT has become more than a place to live—it has become his home.

“What really cemented my decision to stay in the Territory was that I was given the chance to make a difference. Whether it’s engaging with the local community or working in a role that allows me to grow professionally, I feel like I’m part of something meaningful here. The Territory has become more than just a place to live—it's home”.

“The NT Government offers various programs aimed at supporting students, and it is even possible to secure a role while your course is still ongoing. My own experience has shown that the Territory values talent and dedication, making it an excellent place for students to begin their professional journey.”

“When applying for jobs highlight your adaptability and willingness to contribute to the local community. NTG values individuals who are flexible, proactive, and committed to making a positive impact.
