Pursuing a Bachelor of Humanitarian Aid and Development at Charles Darwin University (CDU).

The NT provides unique opportunities to work with diverse populations, broadening my understanding of social issues and humanitarian challenges.

My experience in the NT has been incredibly rewarding.

“The supportive community in Darwin, the vibrant multicultural events, and the opportunities to contribute to meaningful causes make the Territory a fantastic place to live and work.”

Lucy’s journey in the Territory began when she relocated to Darwin in 2019 to further her studies and immerse herself in the region's rich cultural diversity with a particular interest in working with Indigenous communities. “Originally, I am from Vietnam, but after living and working in Darwin for several years, I now consider the NT my second home. The warm, tropical climate here reminds me of my home country, and the community's welcoming nature has made it easy to settle in.”

Lucy is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Humanitarian Aid and Development at Charles Darwin University (CDU), a field that aligns with her passion for supporting vulnerable communities both locally and internationally.

“My experience in the NT has been incredibly rewarding. Studying at CDU has provided me with both hard and soft skills, while working here has allowed me to grow in an inclusive and diverse environment. Professionally, the NT provides unique opportunities to work with diverse populations, including Indigenous communities, which has broadened my understanding of social issues and humanitarian challenges.”

Having worked for over three years in one of Australia’s largest remote communities, Lucy’s experiences have significantly enriched her cultural competency and deepened her understanding of social issues faced by diverse populations. Her roles have included being a Student Support Officer at CDU, where she helps new students navigate their academic journey, and a Therapeutic Residential Carer, supporting children with disabilities and complex trauma. These positions allow her to make a tangible difference in the lives of others and contribute meaningfully to the community.

“The ability to blend theory from my studies with practical experiences in my roles has been instrumental in shaping my career and personal growth.” Lucy’s dedication to her studies earned her the International House Darwin Academic Scholarship, which further motivated her to continue her community work and excel in her field. She values the supportive, inclusive environment in Darwin, which has allowed her to integrate seamlessly into both the university and the broader local community.

In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, Lucy is actively involved in numerous community groups and student organisations in the NT. “I also a volunteer with the International Lions Club, Kindness Shake, and the Red Cross, where I contribute to community outreach and multicultural events. Additionally, I participate in the CDU Student Senior Buddy Program, mentoring new students to help them transition smoothly into university life. I am proud to represent the Vietnamese community in various multicultural events, such as modelling traditional Vietnamese attire for the Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) with the Australian Vietnamese Family Association and The Joy of Many Colours multicultural fashion show for the Red Cross.”

Lucy has found her place in the NT, embracing the region’s natural beauty, vibrant multicultural atmosphere, and unique professional opportunities. “I love exploring Darwin’s natural surroundings—whether it’s watching the stunning sunsets, walking through local markets, or visiting nearby national parks. The combination of outdoor activities and community events makes NT life both exciting and fulfilling.”

The NT’s inclusive spirit has helped Lucy feel at home, and she’s proud to contribute to the Territory’s growth while enriching her own personal and professional development.
