Rochelle Hunt
Inclusion Advisor (Senior Teacher), East Arnhem Region. Student Wellbeing and Inclusion Programs and Services, Department of Education and Training.
I have always been passionate about inclusion and supporting students with different needs.
Rochelle’s journey first began in the UK as a teacher, and it continued across the diverse landscapes of Big Rivers Region and Darwin, encountering students with unique communication needs. It was during her time at a specialist school in Darwin that she collaborated closely with Speech Pathologists. Their expertise inspired her to pursue a degree in Speech Pathology in Adelaide, blending her love for teaching with a deeper understanding of communication. With experience in early intervention and acute care at Royal Darwin Hospital, as well as the Department of Education and Training, Rochelle realized how seamlessly teaching and Speech Pathology complement each other. The Inclusion Advisor role presented a unique opportunity to harness these two areas of her expertise.
“Having a background in Speech Pathology and teaching helps me to support teachers to develop communication inclusive learning environments.”
Having spent several years in Darwin Rochelle and her family were excited to embrace the unique opportunity and lifestyle East Arnhem has to offer. The relocation support the Department of Education and Training had to offer made the transition smooth for them.
“We love the beautiful beaches, how good it is to live 2 minutes from the main office and not having to commute, and how friendly and supportive everyone is.”
Living in East Arnhem has introduced Rochelle to experiences she would never have encountered elsewhere. Immersing herself in new cultures and languages, particularly through visits to remote communities “Spending every weekend outdoors exploring new places to camp and swim. As well as participating in community events.”
Working with educators in Rochelle’s role as an Inclusion Advisor is different every day. Some days she leads professional training sessions for large groups, while others involve one-on-one coaching or resource preparation and planning tailored to the needs to specific schools, educators, and students.
Rochelle’s proudest moment as an Inclusion Advisor is empowering educators to feel confident in supporting students with additional complex needs. Seeing educators grow in their roles is incredibly rewarding.
