Ruan Du Preez
Middle Years Teacher at Jilkminggan School
To say I have already learned so much about myself in the short time I’ve been in the Northern Territory would be a massive understatement.
From South Africa, to New Zealand, to Jilkminggan - a road less travelled, but a teaching adventure like no other.
Meet Ruan, a Middle Years Teacher at Jilkminggan School in the Big River Region.
Ruan came to the Northern Territory because he "...wanted to explore a side of teaching that isn’t usually available in most mainstream schools. After joining the Teacher Recruitment Pool I received a phone call from the principal and it sounded exactly like the adventure it’s been for so far."
Ruan flew into his new location in the Big Rivers region on a small single prop aeroplane during wet season, noting "If I didn’t say I was nervous and apprehensive I’d be lying, but as soon as I arrived in the community and the school, it was warm and welcoming."
"To say I have already learned so much about myself in the short time I’ve been in the Northern Territory would be a massive understatement. I’ve realised how I react to things (and wildlife!) that I’d never thought of before. I’ve also been given the scope and space to assess what I want to do with my time here, what I’d like to change about how I approach things and I've also realised some personal goals I never would have considered in another context."
