Aamish Isaacs

Budget Analyst, Department of Treasury and Finance

The Northern Territory is a unique jurisdiction, so working on a range of tasks has been very interesting and insightful, which has significantly enhanced my skillset.

Living in the Top End has been about enjoying everything it has to offer.

Aamish Isaacs made his move to the Territory last year for the Graduate program with the Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF). For Aamish, the move was easy – “it was as simple as packing a few boxes and getting the car transported up. There were a lot of other graduates who just moved from interstate, so everyone was willing to make friends and it made things easy.”

Aamish applied the NT Government Graduate program because of his interest in the public sector and unique opportunities the Territory has to offer. Over the last year, he had the opportunity to rotate within DTF and work across multiple functions. Aamish worked on the NT Economy Book and Industry Outlook as part of the 2024-25 Budget, and had the chance to contribute to the 2023-24 Treasurer’s Annual Financial Report.

“Working in different teams within Treasury has enriched my analytical skills and provided me with a comprehensive understanding of economic and financial matters.”

After completing the graduate program, Aamish accepted an ongoing position within the DTF, simply because “the whole experience has been great”!

“Darwin gives a laid-back tropical lifestyle with plenty of career opportunities, and it’s easy to make friends if you’ve just moved up. An added bonus is the social culture, and the dry season is packed with events! The Territory sets itself apart from anywhere else.”

Other than work, Aamish enjoys “catching sunsets with friends, going to markets, visiting pristine waterfalls and attending fun weekend events.”

“Darwin is a gateway to Asia, where long weekends can be spent in Bali or East Timor! It’s an experience you won’t get down south.”

Speaking of one piece of advice he would give to those who consider applying for the Graduate program, Aamish advised:

“Being open to working in a range of teams can broaden your skillset and enhance your abilities for the future. If you are still considering applying for the Northern Territory Public Sector or Graduate program, I would say take the leap – it’s worth it.”
