Meet Joy Morogo, a DLI Project Manager in Alice Springs, and discover her rewarding career, meaningful projects and life in the Northern Territory.
After completing a Master of Project Management at Central Queensland University, Joy Morogo was actively looking for an opportunity to begin her career when a Project Manager role with the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure (DLI) became available.
Having never visited the Northern Territory before, Joy saw it as the perfect opportunity to put her skills into practice while experiencing a new part of Australia. She was also drawn to the public sector and the opportunity to contribute to projects that have a meaningful and lasting impact on communities.
Moving from Brisbane to Alice Springs was a big change, but one Joy embraced with an open mind.
“I saw it as a chance to experience a new part of Australia while using my skills. The experience has been incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally.”
Today, Joy works in Housing and Land Servicing, helping to coordinate projects from their early stages through to completion.
No two days look quite the same. Her work can include coordinating with contractors, managing project timelines and budgets, attending site visits, managing risks, resolving challenges and ensuring projects remain on track.
For Joy, the most rewarding part is seeing the real outcome of that work.
“One of my favourite parts is seeing a project take shape from a concept on paper to a completed home that will make a difference to someone’s life.”
Since joining DLI, Joy has worked alongside people with a wide range of experience, expertise and backgrounds. She describes her team as supportive, approachable and dedicated.
“Everyone brings a different perspective, yet we all work seamlessly together towards a common goal. It creates an environment where we can learn from each other and continuously improve.”
DLI has also supported Joy’s professional development by giving her exposure to different projects and new challenges. She has been able to strengthen her project management skills while learning from experienced colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge.
Joy also values DLI’s focus on continuous learning through training and seminars, which provide opportunities to learn from industry experts and better understand areas relevant to her role.
Outside work, Alice Springs has offered a lifestyle Joy did not expect. One of the first things she noticed was the greenery, which reminded her of the town in Kenya where she grew up.
“I loved Alice Springs from the moment I arrived. Everything is so close by, and I no longer have to sit in traffic for hours to get anywhere.”
Site visits have also introduced Joy to experiences she could only imagine having in the Territory. Her work can involve driving hundreds of kilometres through the outback, with endless open roads, road trains and the occasional cattle sighting along the way.
“I particularly enjoy the scenery, and my favourite route is the one out to Hermannsburg.”
For Joy, moving to Alice Springs has brought together meaningful work, professional growth, supportive colleagues and the opportunity to experience a completely different way of life.
Her message to anyone considering a role with DLI is simple.
“I’d say go for it! Working at DLI isn’t just about the job. You will experience the Territory, work with diverse communities and have opportunities that support your personal and professional growth.”
