Where Territorians go: 5 weekend trips around the NT
Living in the NT means the best trips aren’t always to the other end of the country…they’re the weekends built around a swim, a pub lunch, or a seasonal moment you only hear about through word of mouth.
These are the trips Territorians do, easy to fit into Territory life, with just enough planning to make them work.
Darwin to Mary River
The Mary River is where locals go when they want to slow things right down without going far. Most people build the day around one main activity on the river, then let lunch turn into the rest of the afternoon.
People tend to leave home early when it’s cooler and the light is better, knowing the afternoon is best left unplanned. Lunch usually stretches longer, and no one’s rushing back to town.
Only locals know:
- One main activity with a good meal is plenty so don’t overpack your day.
- Slip in time doing nothing between the river tour and lunch; that’s the sweet point.
- In the build-up or shoulder season, the storms and skies alone are worth the drive.
Darwin to Litchfield (but not that Litchfield)
Litchfield never really drops off the radar here; you just need to know when and how to go to start getting a feel for regional life in the NT.
Outside peak hours, it feels quieter and more personal, especially when the seasons start to shift. Most people keep it simple: pick one or two swimming spots, skip the busiest carparks, and chill out.
Only locals know:
- Late Sunday afternoon works best, when the heat softens and day-trippers have already headed home.
- Walking a little further usually means fewer people.
- A refreshing drink and a sunset dip beat a midday rush every time.
Darwin to Daly River
For a lot of people in the NT, this trip is best in the late Wet Season with the incoming tides when Daly River fishing is good and the road is quieter. Depending on conditions, some weekends you stay the night, other times you stop, enjoy a local pub, and keep moving.
Only locals know:
- Shoulder-season fishing means fewer caravans and better chats with locals.
- Roadside stops are half the experience on this drive.
- By peak dry (July school holidays), it’s busier and less relaxed, so many locals either go earlier or wait it out.
Alice Springs to East MacDonnell Ranges
For Alice Springs locals, the East Macs are a reliable weekend option, especially when the weather cools down. Compared to the West, they tend to feel less busy and better suited to slow exploring. Sunrise and sunset matter more than the middle of the day, and shorter walks often beat full hikes.
Only locals know:
- Pick a start time that avoids the heat rather than sticking to a fixed itinerary.
- Skip the busiest gaps and head to one or two quieter spots - it makes the place feel like yours.
- Keep the plan light; the East Macs work best without a full schedule.
Long weekend hack: Darwin to Bali or Singapore
Yes, locals really do this! When a three-day weekend lines up, some Territorians skip the road trip altogether and head north. Direct flights, minimal time-zone change, and easy timing make both Bali and Singapore surprisingly doable without taking annual leave.
People don’t go for sightseeing. The appeal is simple: eat well, enjoy a spa day, relax by the pool and come home feeling better than when you left.
Only locals know:
- Early flights out and late flights back maximise the weekend.
- It’s about doing very little, not seeing everything.
And that’s usually all you need to kick off out here. If you’d like more local ideas like this, our newsletter’s a good place to start.
