Applicants need to be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, have Australian permanent residency or have a current visa allowing them to work in Australia and hold a current C-Class manual NT Driver Licence. You must also undergo a National Police Check and hold, or be in the process of obtaining, a Working with Children card.
Youth Justice Officers are responsible for:
- the safety, security, care and wellbeing needs of young people in detention.
- responding to emergencies that may include conflict, injuries and medical incidents, and work with young people during challenging situations by diffusing and managing conflict.
- being a positive role model for young people, including advising them of their rights and responsibilities, supporting their attendance and progress at programs and schooling activities during their time in detention.
- preparing formal reports regarding incidents during shifts and preparing regular reports on a young person’s rehabilitation, security, welfare and behaviour.
- working with young people from Aboriginal or diverse cultural backgrounds in a culturally competent way.
- working within a team and ensuring they foster a positive workplace culture and as a public sector employee maintain a high level of integrity and adheres to the values of the Department and the NT Public Sector Code of Conduct.
- maintaining a medium level of strength and fitness to complete long shifts with active detainees, engage in physical interventions when required and respond to emergencies.
Opportunities for Youth Justice Officers are advertised at Administration Officer 4 level. The selection panel will evaluate each applicant and determine the most appropriate classification level for them within the salary range.
