“If you’re passionate about making a difference, NTPS is the place to do it. The work we do directly impacts the lives of Territorians, and there’s something incredibly fulfilling about being part of that. Tailor your application to highlight your commitment to public service and your personal 'why.' The NTPS values those who are driven by purpose”

I’ve been able to pursue my passions and make real impacts.

Senior Advisor at the Department of Education, Nilesh (Nil) Dilushan, has called the Northern Territory home for over six years, having relocated from Sri Lanka to pursue his studies at Charles Darwin University.

"After graduating from the Territory University, I was eager to channel my skills in data analytics, project management, finance, and governance into a role where I could make a tangible difference. The Northern Territory Government (NTG) offered me the perfect platform to do so. The opportunity to work on the international education agenda and contribute to improving education outcomes, especially for disadvantaged and vulnerable young Territorians, was incredibly motivating. It was this drive, combined with the Territory’s reputation as a place of endless possibilities that led me to my current role within the Department of Education."

Working for the NTPS has provided Nil with numerous opportunities for both professional and personal growth.

"As a Senior Advisor, I have the chance to work on complex challenges in policy and strategy, developing innovative solutions that have a real impact. But beyond the professional rewards, the sense of community here is unparalleled. I’ve been able to pursue my passion for multicultural youth advocacy by founding and chairing two non-profits, Rotaract and Kindness Shake. These organizations have allowed me to empower young people, create leadership opportunities, and foster a service-minded youth movement within the Territory."

Nil advises those considering a role in the NTPS to embrace the unique opportunities that come with it.

Reflecting on their journey, Nil shares what makes the Territory so special.

"When I first moved here in 2018, I was drawn by the Territory’s reputation for being a land of opportunity, and it hasn’t disappointed. The NT’s close-knit communities foster a strong sense of belonging, and the lifestyle here is truly unique. Whether it's the laid-back atmosphere, the work-life balance, or the chance to make a real impact, there’s something about the Territory that just draws you in."

For Nil, the decision to stay in the NT was shaped by both the opportunities and the lifestyle.

"I’m not one for cold weather, so the Territory’s warm climate was definitely a plus. Despite warnings about Darwin’s humidity, I’ve found it quite manageable—especially with the stunning tropical storms and monsoonal rains that more than make up for it. And there’s nothing quite like ending a day with a sunset stroll at East Point, reminding me of how lucky I am to call this place home."

Nil's advice to those considering moving to the NT?

"Embrace the Territory’s sense of adventure and community. It’s a place where you can grow both personally and professionally, building meaningful relationships along the way. Living and working here has been a transformative experience for me, and I believe it can be for others too."
