"I love this adventure I have chosen for myself."

Amy Peterson

A/Executive Director Enterprise Project Services, Corporate and Enabling Services Division, Department of Logistics and Infrastructure

The Territory has allowed me to experience both ends of the spectrum, from boots in the dirt to executive leadership.

Amy Peterson came to Darwin in 2008 for what was meant to be a short visit.

After just five days in the Territory, she had been offered multiple job opportunities. Six weeks later, she relocated from Tasmania into a new city, a renovation project and a completely different way of life.

“It was a leap of faith into a new city, a renovation project and a whole new adventure.”

Originally heading towards a role in the mining industry, Amy’s career took a different path after she joined the then Department of Lands and Planning. What began with a goal of becoming a licensed surveyor became something much broader.

The role opened doors to technical work, leadership, public service and professional networks across the Territory, Australia and beyond.

Today, Amy is A/Executive Director Enterprise Project Services at the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure. Her role spans strategy, governance, organisational improvement and supporting teams to deliver better outcomes across the department.

“No two days are ever quite the same.”

Amy now leads a newly established branch within Corporate and Enabling Services, helping shape its purpose, identity and value across the department. For her, it is a chance to build something new, explore better ways of working and create an environment where people can collaborate, grow and deliver meaningful outcomes.

Her career in the Territory has taken her from remote fieldwork as a government surveyor to executive leadership. In her earlier years, a normal week could involve flying into remote communities, navigating rough tracks by four-wheel drive, cutting survey lines through bushland or working on specialised infrastructure projects in isolated locations.

“The Territory has allowed me to experience both ends of the spectrum, from boots in the dirt to executive leadership.”

After four years in Canberra, Amy returned to Darwin and picked up where she left off. The relaxed lifestyle, strong sense of community and opportunities for adventure continue to be part of what makes the Territory feel like home.

For Amy, DLI has offered challenging and rewarding work while supporting the things that matter outside of work, including family life, sport and community commitments.

“The Territory offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to be aspirational in your career without compromising the things that matter outside of work.”

Amy says the diversity of work, people and opportunities in the Northern Territory means you can shape your own career path while contributing to projects that matter to Territorians.

Here, she has built a meaningful career, raised a family, contributed to her community and made time for the lifestyle she wants to enjoy.

“I love this adventure I have chosen for myself.”
