Go West for Outback Water holes
If you consider moving to Alice Springs, there’s a good chance you will fall in love with the outback and surrounding desert landscapes.
Tjoritja/West McDonnell Ranges is a National Park featuring stunning natural beauty, the famous Larapinta Trail and a number of permanent water holes.
The larger water holes such as Ormiston Gorge, Redbank Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge and Ellery Creek Big Hole (voted #10 on Tourism Australia’s Top 10 Beaches for 2026) are a great place to explore, have a picnic and take a dip.
All of the attractions in the park are accessible from Alice Springs via Larapinta Drive. Glen Helen and Ormiston Gorge are 135 kilometres drive from Alice Springs and to better appreciate them consider an overnight stay. Camp grounds and facilities are at most places but check to see if you need to book first.
Nearer to Alice Springs on the drive out are some great spots to explore on a day trip. These include Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm and Wallaby Gap.
As most of the natural attractions in the West Macs offer a range of walks, planning your adventure will ensure you are prepared. Observe park safety signs, wear appropriate clothing and carry and drink plenty of water.
