Eligibility criteria
The Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) and the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet (CMC) welcome students who will complete a bachelor's and or master's degree this year or have completed in the last three years in the following fields to apply for the graduate program.
To apply for the Department of Treasury and Finance and the Department of Chief Minister and Cabinet graduate program you must:
- be an Australian citizen, or hold permanent residency status or an appropriate visa which has working rights and is valid for the duration of the program.
- be completing this year or have completed a Bachelor degree or higher at an Australian university in the last 3 years in any of the following fields:
- accounting
- actuarial studies
- arts
- business (specialising in accounting, commerce or economics)/business administration
- commerce, trade and investment
- communications and marketing
- criminology
- data analytics
- disaster management
- economics
- environmental science/environmental management
- finance/financial management
- international relations
- law
- mathematics
- policy and First Nations policy
- political science/politics
- emergency management/risk management
- public policy/policy evaluation/public administration.
- provide evidence your qualification is recognised in Australia if attained overseas.
If you have completed a masters degree, providing it and the undergraduate degree used to obtain your masters qualification are both relevant and outlined above. Transcripts for both qualifications must be attached to your application.
How to apply
To apply you need to:
- complete the online application form
- provide a maximum of 2 pages with detailed resume or curriculum vitae stating:
- work experience
- relevant qualification(s)
- duties and achievements in previous roles
- contact details for at least 2 current and relevant referees.
- Provide a 1 page cover letter to the 'Selection panel' addressing the following selection criteria:
- demonstrate conceptual, analytical and research skills
- be able to apply academic knowledge and concepts to practical situations
- have well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
- work as part of a team and organise your own workload to meet deadlines
- be able to prepare concise and accurate documents with attention to detail
- the ability to take feedback on board and learn from it.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates are encouraged to apply.
To be considered for the graduate program, you must ensure all sections of the application form are completed and submitted online with the required supporting documents.
Applications must be submitted via the Employment opportunities online website.
Shortlisting commences after applications close. Your application will be reviewed by senior executives from each agency.
If you are shortlisted for an interview, you will be contacted by phone and required to complete a pre-interview task.
Interviews are conducted in Darwin. If you are located interstate or outside the Darwin region, you will have the option to interview via video conference.
You will receive notifications and updates on the shortlisting process throughout this stage.
If you are shortlisted for an interview, you and your referees will be contacted by phone from the respective agency. You will be required to complete a research and written pre-interview task.
During the interview you will have the opportunity to:
- discuss your academic achievements
- speak to work experience
- promote your personal qualities
- ask questions about the agency and business unit rotations
- query potential employment pathways.
Post interview, we may require you to undergo security checks and declare any actual or perceived conflicts of interest. You will be given guidance through this process.
If you are successful, you will be contacted directly by the Department of Corporate and Digital Development, Early Careers Unit.
Regardless of outcome, you will be advised in writing of the outcome of the selection process.

What you will need if offered the position
Supporting documentation
If you are offered a graduate position, you must provide proof of qualification completion and eligibility for employment in Australia for the program's duration. This includes:
- Certified copy of your academic transcript(s).
- Certified copy of your birth certificate or passport.
- Certified copy of your visa details outlining working conditions (if applicable).
- Certification of overseas qualifications (if applicable), which can be obtained through the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
How to obtain certified copies
To certify your documents:
- Make a photocopy of the original certificate or academic transcript.
- Present both the original and photocopy to a Commissioner of Oaths, Justice of the Peace, or a university Registrar for verification.
- The official will sign and certify the photocopy as a true copy of the original.
