Jo Boyle
Year 5/6 teacher at Zuccoli Primary School
The Territory is an awesome place to live – it is a relaxed way of life, and I have loved bringing my children up here.
"Only in the NT do flies flock to the coolness of the fridge."
This is just one of many 'only in the Territory' anecdotes you may find yourself having when you move here - but it's our humour, our weather, our schools and the unique teaching opportunities that make the Territory a great place to call home for many people.
Meet Jo, a year 5/6 teacher at Zuccoli Primary School in the Top End region.
Jo and her husband left -7 degree Scotland in 2015 and set their sights on a new life in the Northern Territory.
Jo's most rewarding experience from her time teaching in the Territory has been having a trusting leadership team and positive working environments. They've "allowed me to develop and trust that I can do a good job - so much so that I have had challenging students put into my class because it is seen as a settled environment."
Her advice for a teacher considering the Territory, "Be patient, flexible and open to working with students to achieve their potential, building relationships is the most important part of it."
Zuccoli Primary School has been a wonderful place to grow and feel supported as a teacher. For Jo she says, "the senior leadership team focus on the culture of the school and do little things when they notice you're feeling unwell or down – e.g. bring you flowers, tea/coffee, chocolate and give extra release when available."
The Territory has allowed Jo to achieve things personally and professionally that she may not have achieved in her home location. "I have moved to the other side of the world away from family and friends, had a family, completed a second bachelor degree (with 2 small children), secured my first teaching role whilst completing my studies, built our first home in Australia and supported others with various things in their lives."
