Urusha Tamang

Urusha Tamang, Graduate Finance Officer at the Department of Health has called the Territory her home for over four years. Urusha originally moved from Sydney, her roots tracing back to Nepal.

"After graduating, I began my career in a small accounting firm. However, I sought to expand my knowledge and learning horizons. I saw the Northern Territory Government (NTG) as an excellent platform for exploration and growth."

Reflecting on the benefits of her Northern Territory Public Service (NTPS) role, Urusha emphasised the Graduate Programme's impact on her professional growth and perspective.

"The Graduate Programme allowed me to explore various work units within the department, enhancing my capacity to perceive things differently. It honed my analytical skills and provided practical applications for my theoretical knowledge in accounting and finance.”

Urusha highlighted the unique nature of different work units within the NTPS, likening them to diverse body parts functioning together as a whole.

"Each work unit welcomed me and respected my contributions. Colleagues were supportive and encouraged me to voice new ideas, fostering a sense of value within the team. While my role in finance may not directly serve the public, it acts as a backbone to ensure the community receives quality services.”

Elaborating on advice for potential NTPS applicants, Urusha emphasised the appeal of continuous learning, growth, and work-life balance within the NTG.

"If you seek an environment that fosters continuous growth while maintaining a work-life balance, the NTPS is an ideal fit."

Reflecting on challenges faced during her move, Urusha mentioned adapting to the humidity during the wet season and highlighted the costs associated with domestic and international airfares.

Despite challenges, Urusha chose to stay in Darwin due to reduced travel time intrastate and the opportunity for a better work-life balance, allowing her to spend quality time with her husband.
