Elle Conway

Communications Officer, Elle Conway has been residing in the Territory for four and a half years, having moved from Canberra, where she pursued her studies.

"After working in private and political environments, I was keen to further my skills in communications and media by joining the Northern Territory Government (NTG). My interest in the economy and Activate Darwin initiatives, which I developed while working at Parliament House, along with my existing relationships with Department staff, led me to seek a role within the Strategic Communications team at the Department of Chief Minister and Cabinet. The stability offered by the NTG was also appealing, and has enabled me to purchase my first property here."

Working for the Northern Territory Public Sector has provided Elle with various benefits, notably in achieving a balanced lifestyle.

"Within Strategic Communications and Engagement we work in a compressed, 9-day fortnight. This additional day off every fortnight has allowed me to develop my passion as an illustrator and establish my side business. It also enables me to plan regular 'long weekend' getaways out of the city, whether that’s camping here or traveling to Bali."

"In addition, the six weeks of leave granted by NTG allow me to spend quality time with family and friends. I value the structured hours of my position, which leave my weekends free."

Elle advises potential NTPS job applicants, "If you're seeking to upskill in a new environment, take the chance."

Regarding her favourite aspect of living in the region, Elle expresses her love for the opportunities and adventurous spirit that define the Territory.

"I've always felt drawn back here, influenced by my parents' stories when they lived here. They always said the NT was “the land of opportunity.” The Northern Territory attracts individuals willing to try something different. It's a place where if you're daring to take a chance, this is the place to do it."

Reflecting on the challenges she faced when moving, Elle notes, "Looking back, I didn't encounter any specific challenges. I was fortunate to find a housemate through flatmates who quickly became a close friend. Finding a rental unit in 2019 was seamless for both of us after receiving and accepting job offers."

Elle's decision to stay in the NT was largely influenced by the lifestyle and weather.

"I'm not a fan of the cold, and despite lots of warnings about the intense humidity in Darwin, I haven't found it unbearable – though I am very fortunate to work in air conditioning. The spectacular tropical storms and monsoonal rain definitely make up for the humidity."

"The warm weather and adventurous way of life creates the sense of a working holiday. There's nothing better than unwinding after work with a stroll at East Point at sunset, to appreciate how lucky we are to call this beautiful part of the world home."
