Jah-Ryse Marco Godinho dos Reis

Jah-Ryse Marco Godinho dos Reis – a Trainee within the Business & Workforce Division of NTG – has called the Territory home for six years. Originally from Portugal, Jah-Ryse then travelled to East Timor in 2010 with his family before moving to Darwin in 2018.

"My interest in a gap year following high school led to a traineeship within the Department of Industry, Tourism, and Trade (DITT) – as per my mom's suggestion – and I aimed to pursue a Cert IV in Business as well as a Cert IV in Leadership and Management!”

Reflecting on the benefits of his tenure with the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS), Jah-Ryse highlighted his vast experience across multiple teams within the Business & Workforce branch.

"By working across various divisions, I've developed a strong work ethic and I’ve gained extensive knowledge about each team's function and their collective endeavours. Being a trainee with DITT has helped me learn how to use software – such as TRM, SAS, and Excel – as well as help me learn to work effectively in teams.”

Offering advice to aspiring NTPS applicants, Jah-Ryse advocated for a mindset of achievement and transparency in work, drawing from his experience in seeking new positions within the organization.

"Strive for a sense of accomplishment in your work and be open about your challenges! I've sought help navigating the application process for other roles and I’ve discussed these difficulties with my supervisor. It was met with positive responses and my supervisor is currently helping me apply for certain positions that can help me grow professionally!”

Describing his fondness for the region, Jah-Ryse expressed his favourite aspects of living in the Northern Territory.

“I love how easy it is to get around in terms of driving; there’s rarely any traffic and I also love how clean the environment is!”

Reflecting on the challenges faced during the relocation, Jah-Ryse expressed initial concerns about building new relationships.

“I found that saying goodbye to my family and all my friends from school was a challenge that I faced when moving away from East-Timor. I was also anxious about creating new bonds and relationships when moving to Darwin considering I wasn’t fluent in English. I spent the first eight of my school years studying in Portuguese and what made this an even more difficult experience is that fact that I have Asperger’s Autism. However, it all turned around great in the end as I have had a better education and more job opportunities available to me!”

Opting to stay in the Territory, Jah-Ryse praised the support of his family, church community, job opportunities, and the diverse events and experiences offered in Darwin.

"My family, my friends, my church community – Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church – have all helped me in integrating. What makes me stay in the Territory now is the friendly community, the environment, my job, the gym I go to (iFitness 24/7) and the events that happen here! Some of my favourite events include the Mindil Beach Sunset Market Events, BASSINTHEGRASS, Darwin GleNTi, Territory Day, the Royal Darwin Show, October Business Month (OBM), and Carols by Candlelight.”
