Serena Stirling

Assistant Director Professional Practice, Student Wellbeing and Inclusion Programs and Services, Department of Education

"I love the diversity of the role and the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team helping schools to implement inclusive practices and strategies to support students with diverse learning needs. "

Serena had been working in an Inclusion Advisor role in WA when she started a 1 year adventure in the Top End. but like many people who come here to work, she fell in love with the place and stayed!

"I am so glad I took the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and take on a new challenge by moving to the NT for work.  The change has been invigorating for me and I encourage others to give it a go. I have had so many amazing experiences and opportunities to learn and advance in my career. I have also made strong connections and friendships here – both professionally and personally."

"Working as part of a multidisciplinary team there are many opportunities to collaborate and draw on the support of others when needed.  Having regular team meetings and individual check-ins with ours line-manager supports us to manage our workloads and look after our wellbeing.  We also recognize and celebrate each others achievements and come together for shared morning teas and lunches to celebrate special events."

Working in the NT with Wellbeing and Inclusion has provided Serena with many opportunities, the most rewarding she says being:

"The chance to travel and work in some remote and beautiful parts of the NT such as Groote Eylandt, Nhulunbuy, Maningrida and Ngukkur.  I have also valued the opportunity to meet and build relationships with my new work colleagues in the NT and the school staff and students I provide support for.  Working in the NT has provided me with so many opportunities that have enabled me to learn and grow!"

"Darwin is such a vibrant, multicultural place to live.  I love the outdoor lifestyle, weekend markets, being surrounded by nature and watching spectacular tropical sunsets every evening.  There is so much to explore and enjoy – everyday is an adventure!"

Serena's proudest achievement from her career in the Territory is:

"Seeing the impact of my support for a student, teacher or school – whether it be delivering professional learning, mentoring/coaching or providing strategies and resources to promote engagement with learning for a young person with a disability.  Feeling valued and appreciated by the people I work with and provide support for gives me a sense of pride and achievement."
